July Tips & Tricks

Fourth of July with Your Pup!

July! The month of American Independence where families all over the country celebrate with picnics pow wows and fireworks! This time of year can be fun for the whole family, but many people do not realize how the Independence season affects their furry friends. July 4th week is the highest rated week for accidents, loss and traumatic events associated with your pets. Veterinarians report that this time of year is the busiest for animal accidents and death.  So this month’s Tips and Tricks are dedicated to keeping your pet safe and sound this holiday season!

Fireworks

july2.jpgAs humans we only hear sounds with a frequency up to 23 kHZ. kHZ measures the decibel on a sound wave. Canines hear at 45 kHZ. This means that sounds that you may not even hear are loud and clear to your furry friends. Cats hear at an even higher decibel  measuring at 64 kHZ. So what does this say about the loudest holiday in the American holiday? That when something is loud to you, it is significantly louder to your pets. Something that causes you to cover your ears, is excruciatingly loud to your pets, and they can not stick fingers in their ears. So many times this causes pets to panic, stress and sometimes even try to escape from the sound by running away from it.  Many times pets cower and shake when the fireworks begin. This is a sure sign of stress and discomfort. Try to accommodate your pet by putting him/her in the quietest place in the house. Never leave a pet outside during a large firework show, and sometimes a calming medication may be needed. See your vet if you think your pet may have a harder time adjusting to the commotion.

BBQs and Picnics

july1.jpgHaving a cookout on a hot summer day or going for a picnic can be a great way for the whole family, including your furry friend to have a great summer season! Here are some tips to keep your pet safe during these fun filled summer days! Cooking on the grill is fun and an American pastime, but remember, no matter how good that steak or burger look to you, you know the grill is hot. Your pets just see something their nose is telling them is yummy so keep pets a safe distance from the fire or grill. Pic nics can be fun, but with food spread on the ground your furry friend can get into some trouble. Bones, candy wrappers and toxic foods can cause a multitude of problems in your pet. Be sure all unsafe foods and wrappers are secured away from you furry friends!
